The World’s Oldest Martial Art
Be astonished by the blazing moves of Kalarippayattu, the ancient martial art of Kerala. Witness the world’s oldest martial art come alive with sword fighting, dagger combat, yoga, and breathtaking fire stunts performed in an authentic earthen arena. This is a raw, powerful, and unforgettable experience that leaves audiences spellbound.
About the Show
Kalarippayattu is believed to be the oldest martial art in existence, with origins dating back over 3,000 years. The word “Kalarippayattu” comes from two Malayalam words: “Kalari” meaning training ground or battlefield, and “Payattu” meaning practice or combat. At Punarjani Traditional Village, our masters demonstrate this ancient art in an authentic kuzhikkalari – a 7-foot-deep earthen arena that has been used for centuries to train warriors.
The performance is a breathtaking display of skill, agility, and fearlessness. Our artists, trained from a young age, showcase a wide range of techniques including weaponry, bare-hand combat, yoga postures, and awe-inspiring fire stunts. It is not just a demonstration – it is a living link to a martial tradition that has influenced martial arts across Asia.

What Makes This Show Special
Highlight 1: The World’s Oldest Martial Art
Kalarippayattu is considered by many to be the mother of all martial arts. According to legend, the art was introduced by Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who created Kerala and established the first 108 kalaris (training centres). Another fascinating legend connects the art to Bodhidharma, a South Indian Buddhist monk who travelled to China and is credited with influencing the development of Kung Fu.
Highlight 2: Authentic Kuzhikkalari Arena
The performance takes place in an authentic kuzhikkalari – a 7-foot-deep earthen arena. This traditional training pit has been used for centuries in Kerala to train warriors. The red earth floor is prepared with medicinal herbs and cow dung, believed to have healing properties and to prevent injuries.
Highlight 3: Masterful Weaponry (Ankathari)
Performers engage in combat using traditional weapons like swords, shields, spears, daggers, and flexible whips. Their movements are lightning-fast, displaying precision, control, and years of rigorous training. The clashing of metal and the swift movements create a thrilling spectacle.
Highlight 4: Bare-Hand Techniques (Verumkai)
The artists demonstrate powerful strikes, kicks, locks, and grappling techniques that are a testament to their immense physical discipline and strength. These techniques target specific vital points (Marma) on the human body, which are also used in Ayurvedic healing.
Highlight 5: Breathtaking Fire Stunts
In a thrilling highlight, performers leap through rings of flames, spin blazing torches, and demonstrate incredible control over fire. This is a crowd favourite that leaves audiences gasping in awe. The bravery, focus, and precision required for these stunts are unparalleled.
